The Story: Bwafwano Home- Based Care and Community School is a Community Based Organization (CBO) established in 1996 as response to the increasing number of HIV and AIDS, TB and Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in the Chipata catchment area, Lusaka District, Zambia. Since inception, Bwafwano has developed into a comprehensive multi-sectoral service organization providing quality care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS and OVC in four provinces in Zambia. Beatrice Chola, a retired nurse founded Bwafwano (which means “helping one another”). This was a direct response to rising dropout rates among children infected and affected by AIDS. The situation was worsened by the apparent low priority for education for these vulnerable children. The founders firmly believe that education has the potential to expand opportunities for vulnerable children, allowing them to seek formal employment and lead more productive lives. Devices will be distributed to the four campuses so that all students have equal opportunities to learn reading.
