7 Reading Moments Captured in 2018

Throughout the year, we’re lucky to collect pictures from around the world that capture a moment in time when reading is touching people’s lives: whether it’s bringing them together, lifting them up, or simply making them feel alive.

Here are some of our favorite reading moments of 2018:

1. A young girl stops by a Ghanaian library, leaving her fish in the corner while she reads, before carrying on to the market. The library was supposed to be closed for a holiday, but the kids came anyway and the library opened.

 

2. A teacher in Spiti Valley in the Himalayas uses the Worldreader Kids app with her students for the first time. Spiti Valley is an enchanting desert mountain valley 12,500 feet above sea level. The region can only be reached by a long, steep road, making it challenging to bring physical books to the children who live there.

 

3. Street children in Isiolo, Kenya enjoy their bi-weekly reading session. Most of the 30-50 children who come to each session are no longer in school, but they have basic literacy skills and are receiving reading support during the session

 

4. Panelists discuss the importance of early childhood reading at the official launch of Worldreader’s Tuta Tuta reading app in Amman, Jordan. Tuta Tuta provides emotional and educational support to conflict-impacted Jordanian and Syrian families by empowering parents and caregivers to read to and with their children via their mobile phones.

 

5. Students and teachers from several schools across Delhi come together to join a storytelling competition, giving colorful and creative performances inspired by stories from the Read to Kids app.

 

6. The inspiring and fierce ladies of Camfed’s CAMA network gather at a Worldreader training session to explore how reproductive health and psychosocial content can empower female students.

 

7. Participants of the 2018 National Reading Day in Ghana sing along with Ghanaian rap star, Okyeame Kwame, as he reveals ‘Read,’ a song he wrote as part of his partnership with Worldreader to promote reading.
