Powering Reading Using Solar Charging Kindle Cases

May 2013

E-readers require electricity. The Kindle4 WiFi and the Kindle Keyboard have 150 to 300 hours of battery life, respectively, bringing them close to the battery life of mobile devices already used in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, some of Worldreader’s project sites are located off the electric grid entirely. Worldreader tested various solar powered solutions, and determined that many of its needs were met with the integrated solar case for Kindle offered by SolarFocus. The retail cost of the cases is high; however, WorldReader signed an agreement with SolarFocus through which Worldreader raised funds for the tooling and production of 200 sample cases. These cases are currently being tested in Ghana.
